The overwhelming of majority of beer brewed in the Czech Republic is bottom-fermenting. Uniquely amongst traditional lager countries, 10 degree beer (OG 1040; 3.5-4% alc.vol.) is the biggest seller.
Some brewpubs make unfiltered versions of the classic Czech styles.

Founded in 1895 by Czech privileged brewers - owners of local brewing rights  and  Czech  businessmen, Czech  pivovar was the direct predecessor of  Budejovicki Budvar. The new brewery has therefore upheld a direct historical  tradition of brewing in Ceske Budejovice that dates back to the 13th century,  when brewing started in the town.

The beginning of brewing in České Budějovice coincides with the origin of this royal town founded from initiative of Czech king Přemysl Otakar II in 1265. All rightful Czech and German burghers based within the town walls had the privilege to brew. Beer sale was ensured by Czech kings Karel IV and his son Václav II by awarding the "Mile Right" saying that no foreign pubs or competing breweries or malt-houses were allowed within 10 km from the town.
